The Google Map Pack (also called the Local Pack) is the map and about three practice listings Google shows at the top of searches like “dermatologist near me” or “orthopedic surgeon in [city].”
It is not ten blue links. It is ratings, distance, hours, call, and directions — the block patients tap when they are ready to book this week. Everyone else is scrolling, or gone.
Agencies under-sell it anyway. Map Pack work is claim-and-clean Google Business Profile, categories, citations, and reviews. Hard to turn into a glossy retainer deck. So practices get blogs and ads pitched harder than the channel that sits above both.
Is the Map Pack the same as ranking on Google?
No. Ranking on page 1 is about organic links to your website. The Map Pack is a separate local-results module.
You can have a site, blog posts, even ads — and still be missing from the map block patients tap first. What you see there is driven largely by Google Business Profile, not by another homepage rewrite. Google’s own local product is the listing; the website is a click-out.
What does the Google Map Pack look like?
The module is a map plus a short list. Some rows can be ads. Organic Map Pack listings still come from the Business Profile graph.
Live walkthrough in the video above: a real specialty search, and why this is not “your website ranking.”
Why does the Map Pack matter for specialty practices?
Private practices rarely have a marketing department. Patients searching specialty + city are often deciding who to call this week. The Map Pack is appointment inventory.
In our audit of 135 private specialty practices, 55.6% did not appear in the Local Pack. That is the first number to fix if you fix only one.
If you are not in that block, more content is usually the wrong first move. Categories, reviews, and consistent name/address/phone across directories matter more — which is why cookie-cutter agencies skip it. That work is local SEO for doctors, not another article.
How do you check if you are in the Map Pack?
Open Google on your phone. Search your specialty + your city the way a patient would.
- Are you in the map results?
- Are nearby peers there instead?
- Does your Google Business Profile match your site (name, address, phone)?
If the answer is no, do not start with ads or a new blog. Start with the profile.
What should you do if you are missing?
Claim and verify the Google Business Profile. Set the most specific primary category (Dermatologist, not Doctor). Fix NAP consistency across directories. Then reviews.
